JAN-16-2009: To all who eager to help in Haiti,
I want to thank each of you personally for all the assistance provided during the search of my missing relatives. I greatly appreciate the information and advice everyone has given, as well as the connections shared with me. Your help has been priceless and extremely valuable.
I have located all of my family members. My relatives are really lucky to be alive while over 150000 people have been already confirmed or presumed dead...
I managed to come in contact with Woudy via my half brother Joel that works for the police swat team in Port-au-Prince. His new house was completely destroyed. He is a lucky man: His job (in Carrefour) is in the vicinity of the epicenter (almost nothing left standing in Petit Goâve). As you know, all radio-telecommunication companies were affected by the multiple seismic waves that have struck the western part of Hispaniola island (from 5pm until midnight, as reported by survivors). Woudy and Joel were able to use a portable satellite telephone of a rescue team from U.S. Haiti Earthquake Task Force to contact us.
Because of the collapsed and unstable houses, my relatives and the whole neighborhood are at the moment sleeping on the ground near my father's house. One option is to temporarly moved everyone to our grandparents'
countryside farms
until the area is rebuilt. However, this is not possible at the moment. The UN peacekeeping force and the international envoy for earthquake recovery in Haiti have advised the population of Port-au-Prince not to be inside the houses. That's why everybody is gathered outside and sleeps in unbuilt area all over the city.
Alyah (Woudy's daughter) got injured while trying to escape with her mother and sister from their collapsing house. They were trapped in the house for several hours. Woudy injured his hand when he along with a group of people were digging them out of the debris. Luckily they managed to rescue them.
Deoud's daughter Amelie got injured as well. However, none of the injuries are severe.
They told us that they were unable to enter the market to buy food. The food scarcity has induced a campaign of robbery. The guards started to shoot and chased people away, including customers. Now almost everybody is living in the streets of Port-au-Prince without food and water.
They have no electricity, and it is still not possible to contact my relatives directly via cellphones. There is neither internet access nor working landlines. All of their mobile batteries are discharged.
The main problem they have at this moment is the lack of food, water and medical supply. If anybody or any organization that can go there and help these people, please do so. And thank you for your help and concern!!!
